Are you interested in improving students’ reading in your classroom, school, and district?  The Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing ÑÇÖÞɫͼ may be just what you need!

The Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.D.): Reading and Writing ÑÇÖÞɫͼ will prepare you to serve as literacy coaches or in other leadership positions within the district.  The ÑÇÖÞɫͼ also helps classroom teachers who want to increase their skills as teachers of reading and writing.

Change Your Rank

A rank change can increase your earning potential. The M.A.E.D. degree ÑÇÖÞɫͼ is designed to fulfill course requirements for Rank II classification (or for Rank I classification for those with a prior master’s degree) and to fulfill the requirements for the Literacy Specialist Endorsement P-12. The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board also requires candidates to pass the Praxis Reading Specialist Exam to receive the Literacy Specialist Endorsement. If you do not take the exam you will still receive the degree and rank change.

Graduate Programs Tuition & Fees

The Kentucky Reading Project/Adolescent Literacy Project offers one 3-credit-hour tuition waiver. are also available. You can receive a  6-credit-hour tuition waiver, plus a stipend, per a full semester.

TEACH Grant

The TEACH grant ÑÇÖÞɫͼ provides funding of up to $4,000 per academic year for anyone enrolled in eligible ÑÇÖÞɫͼs like our Reading and Writing Master's ÑÇÖÞɫͼ.

Finish Faster

The Reading and Writing Program is 30 credit hours. The ÑÇÖÞɫͼ can be completed entirely online within 1.5 to 2 years. Get up to 9 hours of course credit for relevant experience (e.g., NBCT, Reading Recovery Training, Orton-Gillingham Training) with our Prior Learning Assessment.

Applications are accepted year-round.  Students may begin coursework during the next term following admission. 

You will need to complete the ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State Graduate Admission application and submit an official transcript and letter of application. The minimum GPA for admission is 3.0.

Master of Arts in Education: Reading and Writing Curriculum

The ÑÇÖÞɫͼ consists of 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework with a minimum of 9 hours in professional education and a minimum of 15 hours of 600-level courses.

Program experiences include coursework in literacy foundations, teaching word study,  assessment and instruction of striving readers, and leadership experiences in literacy.  You will also choose from electives in areas, such as language arts and content-area reading and writing.  One recent graduate, Sanda Fisher, said, "I love that the reading and writing ÑÇÖÞɫͼ is so applicable to my everyday classroom teaching.  The classes are practical and developed, so that I am learning how to better myself in the classroom."
