MURRAY, Ky. – ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted Math Day 2023 on ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State’s campus on Feb. 9. Nine high schools from the west Kentucky area participated in the event for a total of 160 registered students and 15 teachers. High school students and teachers engaged in a full day of math competitions and math-related activities in Lovett Auditorium and Faculty Hall. 

Math Day began with an individual math competition in the morning followed by an alumnus talk by Howl Bean II. The talk was part of the fifth annual Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series, and students had the opportunity to ask questions about pursuing a career in mathematics. After lunch, students participated in a team math competition where students, in teams of three to four, worked through hands-on activities. Awards were presented to the top performing teams in the team competition, the top performing students in each exam level (lower and upper) and to the top performing school.

The winning teams and individuals are listed below:

Team Competition winners: 

  • First Place: Calloway County High School – Connor Pile, Gary Rogers, Bo Stom and Cesar Villeda

  • Second Place: Graves County High School – Keile Allen, Allison Buckham, Emilie Williams and Jonathan Woods

  • Third Place: Graves County High School – Andre Cervantes-Viera, Connor Drury and Ethan Trimble

Lower and Upper Exam Winners:  

  • First place: Elizabeth Lanier, Calloway County High School; Amber Wu, Calloway County High School

  • Second place: Gary Rogers, Calloway County High School; Ewin Porter, ÑÇÖÞɫͼ High School

  • Third place: Lucy Baldwin, Graves County High School; Cesar Villeda, Calloway County High School

  • Fourth place: Aubrey Naber, Calloway County High School; Ryan Barnett, Graves County High School

  • Fifth place: Logan Vanderburg, Carlisle County High School; Ethan Cain, Calloway County High School

Recognition for Scholarships: Top Juniors taking the Upper Level Exam: 

  • Highest Score: Ewin Porter, ÑÇÖÞɫͼ High School

  • Second Highest Score: Ryan Barnett, Graves County High School

  • Third Highest Score: Rianna Peng, ÑÇÖÞɫͼ High School

Recognition for Scholarships: Top Seniors taking the Upper Level Exam: 

  • Highest Score: Cesar Villeda, Calloway County High School

  • Second Highest Score: Ethan Cain, Calloway County High School

  • Third Highest Score: JJ Williams, Mayfield High School
